All through middle school and high school I was playing different sports. In high school I got into weight-lifting and really enjoyed it. I got my degree in Exercise Science at GVSU and continued playing club sports and weight training. In 2004, I pursued a career in Personal Training at Lifetime Fitness, there is I met my beautiful wife, Diana. I was there for 9 years and I worked my way up into a leadership position. In 2010 I discovered CrossFit, and that changed my whole view of fitness and exercise. I love CrossFit because I can program and coach a workout for my 5 year old son or my 72 year old client. Coaching what I truly believe in is incredible and sharing my passion with so many people is a dream of mine.

Ever since I was allowed in a gym I have had a passion for fitness! I am a personal trainer and started my career at Lifetime Fitness in Novi in 2006, where I really learned about people and realized that this is exactly where I need to be, and I also met my husband, Brooklyn, here. I, hesitantly, left my job there because I became pregnant with my son and was ready to take on my mommy role 100%. I still maintained some clients but I missed being in that gym setting. I discovered CrossFit in 2011 when I was pregnant with my second son and I was forever changed! I joined a local box and really learned all about the community of CrossFit and also was amazed at the strengths that I gained. I have CrossFitted through 3 out of 4 pregnancies, which really showed me about scaling and lightening weight for workouts, so after seeing both ends of the spectrum I became more interested in becoming a Coach. I love sharing my passion, and love learning more and more about this fantastic sport! Watching the changes someone can make in just a short amount of time is the best part about this “job”!

I have been a Detroit firefighter since 1999. I played organized baseball from 6 until high school. Then after high school I played 10 years of softball. I have played sports my entire life and try to remain active. I went to my first CrossFit workout on Thanksgiving day 2011 and was hooked ever since. After doing CrossFit 4 days a week
for 3 years, I went and got my Level 1 certification so that I could begin coaching.

In 2011 I discovered CrossFit, completely by accident. I went from WODing a couple days a week to being totally obsessed and needed it everyday. I love the challenge that CrossFit brings and the feeling of accomplishing that challenge. For me this is strange. I have no athletic background (besides my years of tap dancing). I went to Culinary School wanted to be a pastry chef. I enjoy watching people get stronger. I think that’s what keeps me coming back now. It’s not about me anymore. It’s about watching your average house wife PR their snatch or finally get a pull up.

I decided to give CrossFit a try back in March of 2015 and I was instantly hooked. I always enjoyed working out (lifting weights at the “globo gym” or going for a run), but I never seemed to find anything I could stick with- I’d be motivated for a couple of months and then eventually find a reason, or excuse, to stop my training. With CrossFit I found the ever changing workouts to be challenging and fun, the ability to compete against myself and others provided motivation to push myself and the supportive community within the box made me want to keep coming back for more. I became a coach to give people the same positive feelings I had. I want to help our athletes do things they never thought they’d be able to do, hit PRs and be the best versions of themselves that they can be.

I first started training at the age of 12 with an old weight set in my Grandma’s
basement. Through high school I played on various sports teams and learned a wide variance of training styles. In 2005 I started a 4 year career in semi-pro football, which taught me a new level of training and intensity. After retiring, I struggled to find a regiment that was similar to how I trained for football and nothing could fit the bill until I was introduced to CrossFit. I instantly fell in love with CrossFit because of its incredible adaptability and community. I had always dreamt of becoming a trainer but knew that I’d never be happy at a “Globo Gym”. CrossFit, and more specifically, Grand
Trunk’s community of coaches and athletes inspired me to obtain my CF-L1 and for the first time, I have a job I love.

Being active has always been important to me. I ran track all through high school and continued to run afterwards. I loved running and started training for 5ks, 10ks and eventually half marathons. While I still enjoy running, I fell in love with CrossFit. I took my first CrossFit class at Grand Trunk while I was pregnant. Being pregnant, I quickly learned that CrossFit is completely scalable to each individual. This showed me that anyone is capable of doing these workouts and I also credit it for getting me back into shape after I had my son.
A year and a half later, I am a stay at home mom and CrossFit coach. Watching people hit a PR or conquer a new lift or movement is easily the thing I love most about coaching. Since becoming a member at Grand Trunk I’ve not only been able to workout with my husband and sister (and bring my son!) I’ve also met so many great people who have become great friends! It’s a great community of people that I am proud to be a part of!

Growing up, I had a love for sport and competition; this developed into a love for hard work and determination. This hard work helped me compete at the division two level; here I walked on the football team, earning a scholarship. In addition, I was also a member of the track team. While I was in college I earned a teaching degree, in the subjects of physical education, health, and biology. During my studies, and training, I began to develop a love for fitness. Since graduating, I have been teaching and coaching. I coached football for eighteen years, spending time at Dearborn High, Edsel Ford, and most recently, South Lyon High School. In addition, to coaching football, I was the head girls track coach at Edsel Ford High School. Over the past three years, I have developed a better understanding of Crossfit, its fitness benefits, and how it can be applied to life; and all sports. Coaching, and doing, Crossfit combines everything I love; family, fitness, competition, and teaching.

joined the U.S. Army in November 2006, deployed to Sadr City, Iraq in 2008, conducting urban operations to include counter IED measures. August 26, 2008, the vehicle I was gunning was struck by an IED which resulted in the bi-lateral amputation of both my legs above the knees. I spent the next 3 years at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C., having almost 60 major surgeries before moving back to Michigan in 2011. Since that time I have chosen not to let the injuries I sustained define who I am as a person. I have dedicated a substantial portion of my time to getting back into shape. Not only for health reason but to break down barriers of what “disabled” looks like. I have successfully competed and completed 22 marathons to date including Boston, New York, Detroit and the Marine Corps marathons as a handcyclist. I have also taken on a role as an adaptive athlete in CrossFit and as a public speaker, sharing my story and providing inspiration for others. I have a powerlifting background and won the 1998 USAPL Junior National Powerlifting Championship at 15 in the 242 pound division. My wife recently gave birth to our first child, Finnegan Gene Koulchar in July 2016. We live in Brighton with our 2 dogs Demo and Blitz and I currently work full time as a veteran’s service o cer for Livingston County.
