We’ve talked before about the idea of the CrossFit being an intimidating place.
And it is, especially for beginners.
You’re in a strange place, surrounded by strangers, while you attempt to do movements that are foreign to you and your body.
Frankly, we’re surprised more people don’t run out of the box screaming halfway through their first few WODs.
But the experience doesn’t have to be a terrifying prospect, and there are ways to ensure you are working toward overcoming your fear of CrossFit while getting better at it.
Here are five ways to overcome your fear of CrossFit.
Do Your Research
At Grand Trunk, we always post the following day’s WOD on the Wodify app at midnight so you can take a peak at what to expect. This gives you an opportunity to research the movements you’ll be doing to become more comfortable.
We highly suggest watching the official CrossFit Youtube channel. They do a fantastic job of breaking down all of the movements.
Talk To A Coach
The coaches are there to ensure you are doing everything right. If you’re feeling nervous before a particular workout, ask one of the coaches to keep an eye on you and share feedback if you’re doing something wrong.
If you are not doing the movement properly, you risk injury, and that is no way to overcome your fear.
Focus on Yourself
Don’t compare your actions to others when you’re at the box. A little known fact is that nobody is watching you, so don’t spend time watching them. A quick way to get over the fear is to block out the rest and concentrate on getting through the workout.
Focus on your own movements so you can get better.
Start Small
Don’t try to hit a grand slam when you first step up to the plate. Start with smaller goals. It might even help to write them down so you can be sure you’re on track.
You probably won’t be at the top of the whiteboard your first week, so there is no point in trying to get there. (Plus, you might hurt yourself.)
Tell yourself you’re going to start small and progress properly so that you get used to the movements and start to understand how your body will react.
Accept It
Experts say the first step toward fighting anxious thoughts is to fully accept the anxious thoughts and then decide which path you will follow.
Will you tell yourself you can’t do it and it’s pointless?
Or will you embrace the indecision and decide to fight through the anxiety?
Only by doing the latter will you put yourself on the right path to fitness.
